TYLER POUNDS REGIONAL, TX (TYR)

Notice: This course is now at maximum capacity: insufficient safety pilots to handle further registrants.  Please look to one of the other courses or contact Larry Gaines or Elliott Schiffman for possible referrals for training if you are intent on B2OSH this year.  We will try to help, can not guarantee anything at this late date.

NOTICE: Due to scheduled construction at GYI, we have relocated the clinic this year.

Location: Tyler, TX

Dates: May 22-23, 2010

Host: Michael Parrish

FBO: Jet Center of Tyler  (East of the Tower).  Gas discount for attendees.

Registration for the TX regional clinic 2010 is now open.

The session is oriented to polish formation flying at the B2OSH formation level with the goal to prepare pilots for the advanced clinic.  For pilots demonstrating readiness, we will introduce them to initial 4 ship procedures. Safety pilots should be available for the initial flights. Competent Bonanza piloting skills are necessary along with the "Requirements" listed below.  Advanced 2-ship and 4-ship training sessions will be scheduled both days.

The clinic is limited to Bonanza/Baron/Twin Beech registrants.  Each individual practicing his/her formation skills will be considered PIC and totally and solely responsible for the safe operation of the aircraft.  Please review the waiver that each person will be required to sign.  Dual rudder pedals and working intercom are required.

Friday, May 21 is arrival day unless you are flying in ready for the mandatory briefing at 0800 Saturday morning.

The purpose of the Clinic is to give Bonanza Pilots truly interested in Formation Flying the tools to fly the B2OSH formation flight safely and become skilled formation pilots through practice.

Ground School will start promptly at 0800 local time Saturday, May 22nd.  Anyone that does not make the ground school will not be allowed to participate in the program.  Pilots should plan to participate in 2-ship and select 4-ship formations with formation take offs, fingertip, maneuvering, cross under, break/rejoin, and formation landing.  Pilots should plan on flying three flights each day.

Facilities: Controlled field, multiple 150' wide runways with light air carrier service. The field is located in the East Texas piney woods area with numerous uncontrolled fields within a short distance. Longview (KGGG) is approximately 35 NM East and is the only adjacent controlled field and within a local TRSA. KTYR has a restaurant on site and also has the Historical Aviation Memorial Museum adjacent the Jet Center in the old terminal building.

Frequencies are:

 TWR - 120.1

GND - 121.9

ATIS - 126.25

Registration fee: $50.00 to cover lunch, beverage and snacks as well as pizza and beer/soft drinks Saturday night (any left over funds will go to B2Osh).  There is no restaurant on the field. Participants need to cover dinners.

Click here for Registration Form (cancelled - course has reached capacity)

Requirements: Copy of aircraft insurance face page.  You will be asked to sign a waiver

Note: the T-34 Flight Manual is apparently undergoing a 5th revision.  While awaiting publication the 4th edition is out of print, no longer available in hard copy, but may be ordered in Adobe pdf format at:
http://www.t-34.com/store/merchandise_manuals.asp

The T-34 Formation Flight Manual is required for participation in this clinic. This manual provides basic information about formation flying and standardized hand signals.  Also required is thorough familiarization with "On Your Own",  the Bonanza specific supplement and general information on this web site.

For Registrants:

Tyler Pounds Regional Airport - KTYR Check in at Jet Center of Tyler (903-597-1334): FBO East of the tower off Taxiway C.  Depending on available parking locations, regular tie-down ropes may not reach the rings so bring extra long tie-down ropes.

Motel:  Quality Inn Conference Center 2843 Loop 323 at 69.  Call the hotel directly at 903 597-1301 (ask for Pamela) to register and mention the Bonanza Formation Clinic rate.

Car rental: Hertz, Avis and National have facilities on the field. Contact numbers are:

Hertz – 903-533-8700 (AOPA Discount Code: CDP 10232); Avis – 903-592-2613 (AOPA Discount Code: AWD A451300); National – 903-597-1375.

A list of attendees will be posted on this website to facilitate your arranging shared rentals if you desire.

A list of registrants will be continually updated to help you find someone to share a car or motel room.

Participants successfully completing the course will qualify for 60 ABS Aviator points.

Ground School will start promptly in the Lake Texoma Jet Center at 0800 local time Saturday, May 22nd.

Facilities: Controlled field, former military base with major 9000' x 150'  runway and short, wide crosswind runway if needed.  Parking is ample, but aircraft need extra long tie-downs (tie down rings spaced for large military planes).  The airport provides relatively light traffic and flat terrain.  There are towers, the tallest southwest (2660 & 2619 AGL) flanking Sudden Stop Airport (T32 - a small turf field) approximately 13-16 nm from GYI. Slightly further southwest is Horseshoe Lake, a good landmark for a practice area.  Going beyond the southern limit of the lake will penetrate Dallas Class B airspace.  All other quadrants are fairly benign.  Lake Texoma to the north (on the border of TX/OK) is another excellent landmark with flights staying either on the eastern half or western half and using the point projecting from the south as a boundary between sectors. The field has an aerobatic box which may be activated.  The box boundaries will be discussed during the brief and contingencies for take-off and return for landing will be briefed.

New for this year: GYI should have a tower open during daylight hours. Frequencies are:

 TWR - 120.575

GND - 124.125

CTAF - 120.575
