BONANZAS TO OSHKOSH
NORTH TEXAS REGIONAL / PERRIN FIELD, TX (GYI)
Location: Sherman / Dennison, TX
Dates: May 19-20, 2012
Host: Michael Parrish
FBO: Lake Texoma Jet Center (northeast of the Tower).
Registration for the TX regional clinic 2012 is now open.
The session is oriented to introduce and/or polish formation flying at the B2OSH formation level with the secondary goal to prepare pilots for the advanced clinic. For pilots demonstrating readiness, we will introduce them to initial 4 ship procedures. Safety pilots should be available for the initial flights. Competent Bonanza piloting skills are necessary along with the "Requirements" listed below. Advanced 2-ship and 4-ship training sessions will be scheduled both days.
The clinic is limited to Bonanza/Baron/Twin Beech registrants. Each individual practicing his/her formation skills will be considered PIC and totally and solely responsible for the safe operation of the aircraft. Please review the waiver that each person will be required to sign. Dual rudder pedals and working intercom are required.
Friday, May 18 is arrival day unless you are flying in ready for the mandatory briefing at 0800 Saturday morning.
Ground School will start promptly in the Lake Texoma Jet Center at 0800 local time Saturday, May 20th. Anyone that does not make the ground school will not be allowed to participate in the program. Pilots should plan to participate in 2-ship and select 4-ship formations with formation take offs, fingertip, maneuvering, cross under, break/rejoin, and formation landing. Pilots should plan on flying three flights each day.
Facilities: Controlled field, former military base with major 9000' x 150' runway and short narrow crosswind runway. Parking is ample, but aircraft need extra long tie-downs (tie down rings spaced for large military planes). Lower fuel prices are available at the self-service fuel pump. The airport provides relatively light traffic and flat terrain. There are towers, the tallest southwest (2660 & 2619 AGL) flanking Sudden Stop Airport (T32 - a small turf field) approximately 13-16 nm from GYI. Slightly further southwest is Horseshoe Lake, a good landmark for a practice area. Going beyond the southern limit of the lake will penetrate Dallas Class B airspace. All other quadrants are fairly benign. Lake Texoma to the north (on the border of TX/OK) is another excellent landmark with flights staying either on the eastern half or western half and using the point projecting from the south as a boundary between sectors. The field has an aerobatic box which may be activated. The box boundaries will be discussed during the brief and contingencies for take-off and return for landing will be briefed.
Registration fee: $50.00 to cover lunch, beverage and snacks as well as pizza and beer/soft drinks Saturday night (any left over funds will go to B2Osh). Participants need to cover dinners for the other evenings.
Requirements: Copy of aircraft insurance face page. You will be asked to sign a waiver. The T-34 Formation Flight Manual is required for participation in this clinic. This manual provides basic information about formation flying and standardized hand signals. Also required is thorough familiarization with "On Your Own", the Bonanza specific supplement and general information on this web site. Each pilot is considered PIC and solely responsible for the safe operation of the airplane whether there is a safety pilot or not. RECOMMENDED: "Formation Flying - The Art"
For Registrants
North Texas Regional/Perrin Field - KGYI Check in at Lake Texoma Jet Center FBO on the northeast corner of the field. Tie-down rings are spaced for LARGE aircraft (former military field). Regular tie-down ropes will not reach the rings. Bring extra long tie-down ropes.
