Note: The information for the TX 2-day clinic is at:
TX-mini Clinic

Introduction

The Grayson clinic offers an environment for previously qualified FFI pilots to renew their currency and sharpen their skills.  All attending must have as minimum experience thorough 2-ship training through lazy eights, breaks and rejoins, close trail, element landings, and have recommendation they are ready for 4-ship training.  Complete knowledge of T-34 manual and Bonanza Specific Addendum to the manual is mandatory.  Thursday Ground School will cover only current information for Grayson County practice areas, assignment of safety pilots for new pilots, 4-ship assignments and practice area assignments.  4-ship flights will be assigned with new pilots as passengers to experience the 4-ship experience.  All pilots new to 4-ship will have a least one 4-ship flight with a safety pilot Thursday.  Safety pilots will be available Friday only for the first flight.  Anyone not recommended to proceed without a safety pilot thereafter will not continue in 4-ship training.  One safety pilot per flight of four may be subsequently assigned for evaluation.  All others will practice 4-ship skills working to improve their skill and FFI evaluation if desired.  If unable to meet these expectations attendance at one of the other formation training clinics is more appropriate.  There will be no initial training.  The clinic is limited to 50 aircraft and 50 pilots (sorry, only one pilot per aircraft).

Texas Formation Clinic 2007

Grayson County Airport  (GYI)
Sherman/Dennison, Texas

Host: Ray Lewis.
raylewis2@charter.net

Dates: May 24-27, 2007

The clinic is limited to 50 Bonanza/Baron/Twin Beech registrants.  Each individual practicing his/her formation skills will be considered PIC and totally and solely responsible for the safe operation of the aircraft.  Please review the waiver that each person will be required to sign.  Dual rudder pedals and working intercom are required.

Wednesday, May 23 is arrival day unless you are flying in ready for the mandatory briefing at 0800.

The purpose of the Clinic is to give Bonanza Pilots truly interested in Formation Flying the tools to fly formation safely and become skilled formation pilots through practice.  The Clinic is limited to those that can and will complete the full course.  It is expected this cadre of skilled Bonanza Formation Pilots will hold Mini 2 Day Bonanza Formation Clinics throughout the world to share their Bonanza Formation skills with their fellow Bonanza Pilots.

For those wanting only a two day Mini Clinic, or those needing additional practice, there will be a Mini-clinic at Grayson County May 18/19, 2007 plus Mini-clinics throughout the US and hopefully all countries where there are Bonanza Pilots interested in Formation Flying.

Ground School will start promptly in the Best Jets/Lake Texoma Jet Center at 0800 local time Thursday, May 24.  Anyone that does not make the ground school will not be allowed to participate in the program.  Pilots should plan to participate immediately in four-ship formation with fingertip, echelon, diamond, break/rejoin, lazy-eights, overhead break to trail landing and formation landing.  Pilots should plan on flying four flights each day.  Flying will begin Thursday.  Friday/Saturday will be practice and evaluation for FFI cards for those that desire. The course will finish with a large formation briefing and flight on Sunday morning.

Registration deadline for this session has been extended.  Refunds will be given for cancellations received by Ray Lewis by May 1, 2007.

The T-34 Formation Flight Manual is required for participation in this clinic.  It is available from EAA, catalogue # W39266 (http://shop.eaa.org/html/2warbirds_books.html?cart_id=) and  at http://www.t-34.com/.  (Note: some have reported difficulty obtaining it from the T-34 site;  EAA is recommended as the primary source.)    This manual provides basic information about formation flying and standardized hand signals.

Note: the T-34 Flight Manual is apparently undergoing a 5th revision.  While awaiting publication the 4th edition is out of print, no longer available in hard copy, but may be ordered in Adobe pdf format at:
http://www.t-34.com/store/merchandise_manuals.asp

All participating should print out the Waiver and send it with the application.  All participants desiring to progress to FFI rating must print out and have thoroughly read the FFI Program Manual.  The Wing Evaluation Form and Lead Evaluation Form are also listed.  Even if not seeking the FFI card, the manual should be studied in preparation for the Texas formation clinic - it details the standards to which we will be training.  In addition, the Bonanza Specific Addendum should be printed out and incorporated to your T-34 manual.

For Registrants:

Grayson County Airport (Sherman-Dennison) KGYI (903-624-6666) : Check in at Best Jets/Lake Texoma Jet Center (AirInc frequency: 130.35) on the northeast side of the field.  Tie-down rings are spaced for LARGE aircraft (former military field).  Regular tie-down ropes will not reach the rings.  Everyone bring extra long tie-down ropes.  Best Jets will offer a $0.20/gal fuel discount and will host our dinner Thursday night.

Motel:  LaQuinta Inn, Sherman/Denison, special rate single or double: $69.00, $79.00 for king bed or larger room.  Call direct (903) 870-1122, ask for Bonanza Clinic Rate.

Registration Fee:  $100 covers Thursday night dinner plus noon and evening meals Thursday, Friday, Saturday.   Also included are beverages during the day and a Happy Hour Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the airport.  Breakfasts are included with the LaQuinta room rate.

The schedule is flexible so the training can fit what the group desires as the clinic progresses.  For those completing the full 3 ½ days training, a completion certificate will be awarded qualifying you for 60 of the 100 points required to achieve the Master Aviator award from the American Bonanza Society.

Car rental:
Enterprise will deliver cars to the Airport Wednesday afternoon and pick up Sunday morning.  You will not be charged for Sunday if you sign off your car at Best Jet Sunday morning.  Rates for compact $35.99, Mid-size 40.99.  Call (903) 870-0041 ask for Bonanza Clinic rate and car to be delivered to the airport.

We will post registrants on the web so you may find someone to share a car if you wish.

Grayson County Facilities: Uncontrolled field, former military base with major 9000' x 150'  runway and short, wide crosswind runway if needed.  Parking is ample, but aircraft need extra long tie-downs (tie down rings are spaced for large military planes).  The airport provides relatively light traffic and flat terrain.  There are towers, the tallest southwest (2660 & 2619 AGL) flanking Sudden Stop Airport (T32 - a small turf field) approximately 13-16 nm from GYI. Slightly further southwest is Horseshoe Lake, a good landmark for a practice area.  Going beyond the southern limit of the lake will penetrate Dallas Class B airspace.  All other quadrants are fairly benign.  Lake Texoma to the north (on the border of TX/OK) is another excellent landmark with flights staying either on the eastern half or western half and using the point projecting from the south as a boundary between sectors.  The field has an aerobatic box which may be activated.  The box boundaries will be discussed during the brief and contingencies for take-off and return for landing will be briefed.

During the time of the Clinic plans for the fly-bys at Oshkosh can be discussed.  Pilots that desire to be evaluated for new FFI cards or upgrades or flights that desire to fly together should state this on their registration.  I anticipate that we will not require more than 1 or 2 flights by any one pilot as a safety pilot so all will be flying most flights.   I hope we can have 35 four-ship qualified pilots with 10 new four-ship pilots.  This clinic will be an opportunity for pilots to build 4-ship practices as we all know the difficulty of getting 4 Bonanza pilots together to practice 4-ship formation flying.  The clinic will also be the only possibility to put together a Mass Flight of Bonanzas.  Last year we set a new bonanza record with 16 ships in formation.

0800 Thursday Ground School will cover current information for Grayson County Practice areas, assignment of safety pilots for new pilots, 4 ship assignments and practice area assignments.  4 ship flights will be assigned with new pilots as passengers to experience the 4 ship experience.

1200:  Lunch

1230:  Briefing for 4 ship flights.  Flights with new pilots will walk through the flight before flying.  Other flights will be practicing for FFI evaluation for new FFI pilots and flights for renewal or upgrade to flight leader for FFI wingman.  New pilots should have two flights in the afternoon and other groups could have 3 flights.
