All Bonanzas to Oshkosh participants are required to attend one of the regional clinics.
Training Documents
Bonanzas to Oshkosh formation procedures and protocols are based on FFI guidance. Formation Flying, Incorporated is a private organization authorized to issue FAA-approved Airshow Formation Waiver cards. Bonanzas to Oshkosh is NOT an airshow-precision formation flight; we are an en-route formation designed to get us to Oshkosh together safely. FFI has a program for pilots to earn cards and fly in airshows. Bonanzas to Oshkosh formation guidance is based on the RV Formation Guide and its Bonanza Supplement. Each can be found in the documents section at www.ffi.aero
For those interested, FAST expanded and updated the T-34 Manual. It's called the It's called the Formation Pilot's Knowledge Guide, and is available at http://www.flyfast.org/. Here is Version 3.0 T-34 Formation Knowledge Guide v3.014. It's an excellent reference, but note that where it differs from FFI guidance, FFI rules.
The excellent Darton Video will remain highly recommended. The Darton International video "Formation Flying - The Art". This may be ordered from the T-34 Association. It is an outstanding ground school, approximately 6 hours long, and includes extensive video airborne footage demonstrating all the techniques and maneuvers. The primary objective of our Clinic is to prepare new or inexperienced formation pilots for participation in B2OSH, and to refresh veteran B2Osh-ers for this year's flight. The Clinic will focus on 2-ship basics: formation takeoff, fingertip station-keeping, route formation, cross-unders, and formation landing. We will fly a B2OSH Mass Formation simulation flight. New formation pilots will initially fly with Safety Pilots. By the end of the clinic, pilots should be qualified to participate as B2OSH Wingmen. We will provide opportunities for advanced pilots to practice 4-ship.

The primary objective of this clinic is to prepare pilots for participation in the annual B2OSH mass arrival into Oshkosh. New formation pilots will initially fly with safety pilots. A B2OSH Training Event - Bonanza Formation Training Practice will focus on proficiency in 4-ship flying. Attending pilots must be proficient in 2-ship flying (able to maintain position in element take offs and landings, and able to maintain position in turns, climbs and descents). Training will be for 4-ship proficiency; for Formation Flying, Inc. (FFI) wingman and lead pilot evaluations; and for Showcase airshow routines.
